Attending Asia Regional People’s Assembly
On September 11, 2024, the New Myanmar Foundation attended the Asia Regional People’s Assembly, coordinated by GCAP-Asia, which brought together civil society leaders, members of parliament, and UN representatives to address the pressing issues of hunger, poverty, inequality, and climate change in the region.
The assembly featured sessions on social protection, civil liberties, economic justice, and institutional reforms, with voices from marginalized communities across Asia highlighting the challenges they face, including exclusion from social protection, discrimination, and the struggle for human rights. Notable speakers included Dr. Devinder Sharma, who discussed the stark divide between wealth and starvation, and various parliamentarians who responded to the concerns raised. The assembly aimed to amplify these issues ahead of the Summit of the Future in New York, where a People’s Declaration, drafted during the event, will be presented as a call for urgent global action to support the most vulnerable populations.
