Provision of safehouses to 18 defenders and 20 women made Possible Through French Embassy’s Support
The New Myanmar Foundation (NMF), supported by the French Embassy, achieved the establishment and management of safehouse facilities for Human Rights Defenders (HRDs). From October to April 2024, a total of 6 safe houses were hired .
The initiative included securing rent for four safe houses—two in Karenni and four in Mae Sot, Thailand. Preliminary meetings with partner organisations ensured beneficiary approvals and the identification of suitable safe houses for emergencies involving HRDs. The objective was to provide secure accommodation for threatened defenders in MaeSot, enabling them to continue their vital advocacy work without fear of reprisals.
The program resulted in enhanced safety and security for HRDs, reduced their vulnerability to threats and violence, and supported the ongoing protection of human rights and promotion of democratic values. Initially planned to support five women defenders for six months, the program ultimately benefited 18 individuals in Mae Sot, including family members of the original defenders. Additionally, two safe houses in Chiang Rai, Thailand, led by women HRDs, accommodated 20 more IDP women who fled due to life threats. The successful provision of safehouses ensured the safety and well-being of HRDs, allowing them to focus on their human rights related work without fear. The mid-term to long-term impacts include sustained advocacy efforts, strengthened human rights protection, and increased resilience.
NMF also provided Digital Security Training and Operational Security Training to residents of the safehouses to broaden their knowledge, build resilience, and enable them to continue their work and personal development safely. Among them, some are continuing human rights activities, some are engaging in anti-coup activities, and some are trying to resettle in Thailand by establishing small businesses to generate income for themselves and the migrant and refugee community.
Networking opportunities within these facilities fostered collaboration among defenders, leading to more coordinated and impactful initiatives. Despite challenges such as legal document issues for defenders and negotiating deposits with landlords, the project team remained committed to providing a safe haven for HRDs, highlighting the importance of such support in promoting human rights and justice.
