The New Myanmar Foundation (NMF) successfully supported 42 human rights defenders & activists – 30 persons from six regions within Burma and 12 persons from Thailand—who faced threats from the Junta for their human rights related work. From October 2023, to April 15, 2024, the initiative provided the immediate financial assistance, Euro 150 each for his/her basic needs, relocation, safe passage or safe housing. This effort alleviated financial burdens, ensured safety, and facilitated relocation for HRDs requiring temporary or permanent protection, enabling them to continue their crucial work without fear. The selection process, conducted in consultation with partner organisations, adhered to principles of inclusivity, rigorous evaluation, and accountability, ensuring a diverse and capable group of HRDs received support. 

40 defenders were initially targeted to benefit from the French Embassy’s project. Due to increased need, the New Myanmar Foundation (NMF) supported an additional 2 HRDers as NMF contribution for this program, bringing the total to 42 defenders who benefited from this project. The impact included improved safety and well-being, reduced threats, and empowered HRDs to persist in their human rights or community efforts. The support was used for various needs, including relocation within and outside Myanmar, basic necessities, medical expenses, digital equipment, and safehouse rent. The program achieved significant outcomes, such as enhanced resilience, ongoing human rights protection, and strengthened networks among defenders, contributing to long-term positive societal change. 

Challenges included distributing cash support to beneficiaries with frozen bank accounts and limited mobile money options. The project team overcame these challenges by working with double effort, continuously keeping in touch with the beneficiaries, and finding alternative methods to ensure the delivery of vital aid. This dedication and adaptability ensured that HRDs could receive the support they needed despite the obstacles, reinforcing NMF’s commitment to safeguarding and empowering those defending human rights. Despite these hurdles, the initiative underscored the importance of adaptable support, enabling HRDs to continue their vital work and inspiring further human rights advocacy within their communities.
