The New Myanmar Foundation has been offering vocational trainings with the goal of giving Burmese democracy and human rights activists job opportunities. One of the trainings is hairdressing training. Since September 12, 2022, men’s and girls’ hairdressing trainings have been conducted.
20 trainees, including 10 men and 10 women, were accepted into the hairdressing training batch 1 for a month. A total of 13 trainees, including 6 men and 7 women, have been provided jobs at hair salons in Maesot. Twenty trainees, including 10 men and 10 women, attended the second training, which was open for 5 weeks. Job opportunities were presented to five male and eight female trainees from batch 2. The third hairdressing training, which was open for 5 weeks, had 24 trainees including 12 male and 12 female.
For Burmese pro-democracy activists in Mae Sot to find employment opportunities, this hairdressing training program is helpful. However, finding funds to cover the fees of hairdressing training is challenging. Only a small amount of assistance from “the Smile Project and the overseas Burmese community” was received and there was no support from other fundraisers.
Therefore, NMF respectfully requests that Burmese individuals in the international community and Maesot donate as much as they can to the hairdressing training costs. If this training can go on, Burmese democracy activists in Maesot will be able to find the jobs they need and acquire the skills they need to support themselves.
