On December 10th—International Human Rights Day—the public hospital in Myauk Oo, Rakhine State, was struck by an aerial attack at approximately 10:00 PM. The bombardment resulted in mass civilian casualties. According to the latest reports, 33 people were killed (16 men and 17 women), 27 others were severely injured (18 men and 9 women), and 49 sustained minor injuries. Children were among the dead.
All victims were innocent civilians: patients receiving medical care and their family members and friends who were visiting. Not a single individual affiliated with any armed group was among the casualties.
We firmly condemn the terrorist military’s indiscriminate attacks on hospitals, schools, monasteries sheltering displaced civilians, and other social and religious infrastructure. We express our deepest sorrow and solidarity with the families of those who were killed or injured.
Since the coup, the military has systematically committed such acts of terror. These killings will only be ended when the military dictatorship is fully dismantled. We therefore urge the people of Myanmar to continue their united efforts toward the military complete removal. We also call on the international community to take decisive action to condemn and hold the military accountable for their atrocities.
Furthermore, we urge the international community to take effective actions including sanctions on the companies, organizations, and governments that supply the military with weapons, aviation fuel, and financial resources that enable ongoing attacks on civilians.
