After the February 1, 2021 coup, the New Myanmar Foundation (NMF) provided essential support to activists, Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) ,party members, and selected Members of Parliament (MPs) who fled to the border areas of Thailand and Myanmar to escape potential arrest and violations by the military junta. The junta’s attempts to solidify control met with widespread protests, as the people of Myanmar rejected the coup. In retaliation, the junta arrested numerous activists, protesters, CDM participants, MPs, and others opposing the coup, forcing them to seek refuge at the borders.

With their properties confiscated, bank accounts frozen, and homes seized, these individuals faced significant financial barriers to secure safe passage and relocation. From December 21, 2021, to December 1, 2022, NMF supported a total of 69 displaced persons including 59 males and 10 females as the second passage, providing the necessary resources and cash support for their safety and enabling them to continue their human rights activities. This support was crucial in ensuring their security and ongoing efforts for democracy in Myanmar.
