Safe Passage Support-V2_(ANR)1
Following the coup on February 1, 2021, the New Myanmar Foundation (NMF) provided critical support to activists, Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), party members, and selected Members of Parliament (MPs) who were forced to flee to the border areas of Thailand and Myanmar. The military junta’s attempt to solidify control met with widespread protests and resistance from the Myanmar populace, who did not accept the coup. In response, the junta arrested numerous activists, protesters, CDM participants, MPs, and others involved in peaceful activities against the coup. The affected individuals had to relocate urgently due to the imminent threat of arrest and the junta’s confiscation of their properties, freezing of bank accounts, and seizing of homes.
From December 25, 2021, to December 1, 2022, NMF supported a total of 181 displaced persons, including 130 males and 51 females. This aid was vital for their safe passage and relocation, enabling them to continue their human rights activities and secure their safety amidst the political turmoil. The foundation’s efforts provided a lifeline for those fighting for democracy and human rights in Myanmar.
