In response to the ongoing crisis and the need for sustainable income-generating opportunities, 3 women of the Women Lead Resource Center (WLRC) got the sewing machines and raw materials, with support from the French Embassy through New Myanmar Foundation (NMF), has established the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Center. This initiative aims to empower women by providing them with the necessary resources and support to start and grow their businesses, enabling them to earn income and support their families during challenging times.
The objectives of the SME Center are multifaceted. Firstly, it seeks to empower women through entrepreneurship by equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to start and manage their own small and medium enterprises. Secondly, it focuses on income generation, providing women with sustainable opportunities to become financially independent. Lastly, the initiative aims to have a social impact by channeling a portion of the profits generated towards supporting community development initiatives and providing assistance to those in need.
The establishment of the SME Center by WLRC, supported by the French Embassy, represents a significant step towards empowering women and promoting economic resilience during times of crisis. By providing women with the tools and opportunities to start and grow their own businesses, the center not only enables them to earn income and support their families but also contributes to the overall development and welfare of the community. With a commitment to social responsibility and sustainable impact, the SME Center is poised to make a meaningful difference in the lives of women and their communities for years to come.
Despite its promising objectives, the SME work faces several challenges. Firstly, limited financial literacy and business management skills among participants pose obstacles to effectively running and scaling enterprises. Additionally, cultural and societal norms in some regions may restrict women’s participation in entrepreneurial activities. Access to markets and networks is also a significant barrier, making it difficult for women to reach potential customers and partners. Furthermore, the ongoing crisis exacerbates these challenges, as economic instability and uncertainty make it harder for new businesses to thrive. Overcoming these hurdles requires sustained support, continuous training, and efforts to change societal attitudes towards women entrepreneurs, ensuring that the SME work can achieve its goals of empowerment and sustainable economic development.
